Vaping is growing more and more popular as an alternative to cigarettes. So much so, in fact, that many people who are looking to quit smoking tobacco pick up vaping instead. The main draw is the wide range of juice flavours available that users can enjoy.
What some people may not know is that there are two ways to vape, the classic or MTL and the sub-ohm or DL:
- Classic Style or MTL ("Mouth to Lung") Vaping - Much like smoking classic tobacco cigarettes, the vapour is drawn in through the mouth, and inhaled into the lungs. It usually mimics the same throat hit which normal cigarettes give off. In that case, coils used are typically between 1.6ohm and 2.4ohm resistance. The ejuice used has a higher PG (propylene glycol) to VG (vegetable glycerine) ratio.
- Sub Ohm or DL (Lung/Direct Inhalation) - Another term used to describe this kind of vaping is "cloud chasing", largely because vaping through sub-ohm brings significantly more vapour than the classic style. It also has a throat hit that is much smoother, as vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs of a user. E-liquids used for sub-ohm devices have a lower percentage of nicotine given all the vapour being inhaled. In those cases, the ratio of VG to PG is much higher. Coils used within the atomiser/clearomiser/tank are typically between the 0.5ohm and 1.5ohm resistance. That's where the name sub-ohm comes from: below 1ohm.
PG/VG
As previously mentioned, PG means propylene glycol, and VG means vegetable glycerin. They are the two primary components of an e-juice. Glycerin is a liquid with high viscosity that's quite sweet, holding flavour and helping in the production of vapour. PG is thinner, while VG is a thickener.
For sub-ohm devices, an e-liquid with MAX VG is a non-negotiable element. The ratio tends to play within the 80VPG:20PG range. On the other hand, classic e-cigarettes need PG e-liquid to be higher, with a 70PG:30VG ratio.
Sub Ohm Popularity
Over the past couple of years, Sub Ohm vaping has really taken off as much as classic vaping. New vapers get more than just an opportunity to quit smoking. They get a more detailed view of vaping in general as they customise their devices. No matter what they prefer or what personal standards they have for vaping, they will be able to figure out how to get this for themselves.
Part of customisation involves considering coils, atomisers, clearomizers, tanks and more. The instructions for rebuilding coils and device settings adjustment are easily available on the internet, making things even more convenient for enthusiasts.
Conclusion
Over the last couple of years, vaping has become more and more popular. There are two ways of going about it: classic or mouth to lung, which mimics smoking a cigarette, and the much smoother Sub Ohm or straight to lung, direct inhalation. The latter is also known as cloud chasing because there's far more vapour released.
